The Riga – Series II through V

The Riga by HoklarthermThis series of greenhouses varies only by size. From a width of 7’8″ or 9’8″ to lengths of 7′, 10’6″ and 17″, it is suggested that you purchase one size larger than you think you’ll need. They are manufactured in Germany to the usual German exacting standards.

The aluminum frame is exceptionally strong due to its unique “onion” shape. The shape allows for significantly less frame material, which creates shadows, yet without losing any of its structural strength.

The side panels are 40″ wide, wider than those found in most other greenhouses. This allows for more even distribution of light. All side panels are 8mm twinwall polycarbonate (with UV coating) with the front and back walls being 10mm for added strength. The added thickness of the panels on all sides make for exceptional insulation.

In addition, the roof line is such that there is no “shoulder” so snow simply slides off. This is important if you live in an area of heavy snowfall. The same for high winds. The aerodynamic shape of the roof line allows wind to naturally flow over the roof.

An interesting feature of this model greenhouse is that it comes with larger and more windows than similar greenhouses. There is an over-sized window in the back wall as well as roof vents (the number of roof vents varies depending on the size greenhouse you choose). The door is Dutch style so the top can be left open for even more ventilation. If you want even more ventilation you can easily add windows.

It will be worth purchasing the shelves that are offered as accessories for the RIGA greenhouse. They hang from the frame of the greenhouse and are made of twin-wall poly. The poly enables more even distribution of light vs using wood or metal shelves. Additionally, they hang from the frame of the structure so you don’t have legs to get in the way. There are even removable inserts in the shelves so you can grow taller plants below by simply removing an insert.

It’s important to note that the base for this greenhouse doesn’t come as part of the greenhouse kit and must be purchased separately. It is a critical part of the unit however, and I wouldn’t suggest building this greenhouse without it.

If you live in a climate where the interior temperature of your greenhouse can get above 90 degrees, shade cloth will be another must-have. Since it’s very easy for temps to rise above 90 degrees in almost any climate, the shade cloth will be an important addition for any greenhouse gardenerSeed Trays.

The Riga Series is designed for the somewhat serious gardener. It works well for those who like to start most of their plants and vegetables from seed who what to get a head start on the growing season. Riga offers some very nice seed trays for that purpose as well as shelving. The Riga also works well for those gardeners who want to grow during the winter season. If you are an orchid lover, this greenhouse is also a perfect fit but be sure to use shade cloth.
